Why Writers Need Exercise

A big part of being a writer is sitting. Whether it’s sitting in front of a computer or sitting in a cozy chair with a pad of paper and a pencil, all writers spend a lot of time sitting down. But numerous studies have shown that sitting so much isn’t good for anyone.

What is a writer to do? Get up and move! Even small amounts of exercise each week can allow you to see the benefits to your health. Here are a few tips to help you get out of that chair and get moving.

Set a schedule for breaks. If you have trouble remembering to get up and move, set an alarm on your phone, computer, or clock that will remind you to get up every so often. This could be every half hour, every hour, or maybe every couple of hours. Even just getting up to stretch or walk for 15 minutes can improve your health.

A bonus for writers? Getting away from the computer for a moment can help clear your head and spark your creativity.

Work while exercising. If you’re hard at work on a deadline and don’t think you can step away for a few minutes, use the time to keep working. Some writers use a treadmill desk that allows them to still use their computers while walking.

Another idea is to use the recording device on your phone or another voice recorder to record your thoughts about your project while exercising. Record ideas or even record the text you plan to type in later when you get back to the computer. Many authors are now using dictation software to complete their first drafts.

Find ones that work out different parts of your body or that focus on areas you think need the most work. Then set up a schedule for yourself and stick to it!

You can fight the negative effects of so much sitting by moving just a few times a day, but you have to make it a priority.

If you’re serious about fitting exercise into your writing schedule, then start tracking your workouts in a journal. There’s nothing better than seeing how much progress you’ve made since that day you decided to get up from the chair and work on yourself for once rather than your writing projects. Your health and your creativity will thank you for it.
